Granddaughter’s Tea Party by Russ McKay

Yesterday about the hour of three

I was invited to have high tea

My Granddaughter had invited me

And I was happy to be you see

When I arrived I just said “Gee!”

Smaller teacups…there just couldn’t be

She instructed me…”Please take a seat!”

“Where DO I put my feet?”

“Oh just stick them out there anywhere

It doesn’t matter I really don’t care”

So I removed my baseball hat

And with great difficulty down I sat

My Granddaughter poured me out some air

Which only caused me to start to stare

She lifted up her cup to sip

And I put mine up to my lip

“No wait! Would you like lemon or cream?”

“Ah…yes I’ll have both if it’s all the same”

She poured me out cream air “Say when!”

 “Ah…that’s just perfect once again”

“Shall it be one lump or two?”

“As many lumps as pleasures you”

Her wrist she delicately did bend

Serving me two lumps of sweet pretend

“And if you will now my dear sir

It is time for us to stir”

So I began to stir my air

With a great amount of care

“Now try some…tell me how it tastes”

I tried as a guest not to do so with haste

With my pinky finger stuck straight out

I put the cup up to my mouth

But drink the tea I just could not

The tea was much too…much too hot!

I waited…but when I took a sip

I scalded my poor upper lip

My Granddaughter laughed and giggled with glee

“Thank you for coming to tea with me!”

Not A Sports Star by Russ McKay

He tried to dribble the football…fumble!
He tried to run with the basketball…stumble!
When he tried to run the hurdles… tumble!
Which always caused the coaches to…grumble!

All the other fellas played for teams
But Bobby’s sports were all in dreams
‘Though his sporting life was in the bleachers
He still was popular with his teachers

And after the games his friends would bring
A straight “A” student all through school
That kid sure was nobody’s fool

Some of his classmates after graduation
Received scholarships and admiration
Bobby Excelled while he was in college
Acquiring scads of business knowledge

Three of Bobby’s former classmates
Became very famous sporting greats
Bobby could be jealous it would seem
But it was Bobby who owned the team

MAKING FACES by Russ McKay

When I was little and would have a fit
Mom said “Don’t make that face…please quit!”
But I would still keep doing it

Then she would say” I asked you…Please!”
How would you like it if your face would freeze?”
Well I wouldn’t like it not one bit
But that didn’t make me want to quit
But soon I’d tire of that face too
And I’d go on to something new

I wondered if freezing faces would occur
And when I’d talk my words would slur
And folks would gently shy away
And I’d be alone when I would play
But as time went by I didn’t see
That threatened “Freeze” happen to me

But then one day we got a guest
Aunt Hildy traveled from the West
And then I knew it could really happen
Her face would twist when she started yappin’
She must have been a pest like me
When she was young and quite pretty
Now just one look and everyone knows
She’d made an ugly face and it just froze!

To Bee Or Not by Russ McKay

In every hive you’ll easily see

The busy home of the busy bee

Bees don’t have a choice you know

They HAVE to be bees and they can’t say no

Bees are born to make golden honey

And they never ever make any money

They can buzz and they can fly

But there is nothing they need to buy

So they never fly to the supermarket

Don’t need a car don’t need to park it

If you were a bee than you would see

They live a much different life than we

When You’re A Wren by Russ McKay

As the shells were cracking
The space grew lacking
We wanted to spread our new wings
It was hard to rest
In that tight little nest
Me and my four new sib-lings

After weeks of just sitting
Mom was off flitting
We waited with some sense of dread
Our mouths were held open
We’re always hopin’
We’d be the first to be fed

The grubs kept a comin’
Our Mom sure was somethin’
She could find food with the best
But as we grew older
My siblings grew bolder
There was less food and no rest

The eating’s not easy
Worms make me queasy
But you must never be meek
So I do my best
To live in a nest
Where I am just the fifth beak

I ‘d like a menu more varied
But when she got married
Mom’s motherly instinct took hold
And while I am peeping
It’s bugs I’ll be eating
But this food routine’s gettin’ old

The day came for flyin’
My siblings were crying
But I was up for the dare
Mom took me to the ledge
I looked over the edge
And said” Man that’s a long way down there”

“Go ahead try
I know you can fly
We’re birds…that’s what we do”
“I’m not scared of flight
I’m afraid of the height…
I’ll just wait over here ’til they’re through”

“Trust me you’ll like it”…
“I think I’ll just hike it
I’m hoping on hopping through life”
“You’ve just got to fly
And I’ll show you why
Just watch as I soar with no strife”

 Mom flew through the air
Without any care
She circled about in the sky
I watched her in awe
And though I just saw
I just couldn’t, and wouldn’t, dare try

“I can’t see the ground
I might go straight down!
And I bet if I crashed you would cry”
“Oh sure you can do it
Put wings and mind to it
And you’ll soon fly well as I”

“Just flap your wings
God gave you those things
So we birds could look down on the rest”
I flapped ’round a bit
But then I just quit
“I… think I’ll… look down from this nest!”

Then Dad came along
Just finished his song
And Mom whispered and pointed to me
“It’s time to go son
You’re the last one
And we’ve other places to be”

He nudged my behind
And though I declined
It was over the edge I did fling
I peeked at the ground
Getting closer I found
So I panicked and flapped both my wings

Well wonder of wonders
The air that rushed under
Was lifting and turning me round
I moved this and that
Flapped like a bat
And soared up above that hard ground

I could go over there
I could go anywhere
Mom’s right, I could fly like a bird
“Look what he’s done
Aren’t you proud of our son?”
But ’twas I who had final word!

“Wow!” I extolled
As I flew barrel rolls
And waved my wings to the rest
“That’s no place for me
I’ve got places to see”
I bid happy goodbye to the nest

BRUSHING MY TEETH by Russ McKay

Mom and Dad make me brush my teeth

In the morning and at night

I do it ’cause they want me to

But when I grow up I might…

Not brush them very often

Not brush them like I should

Because I’m not too sure that doing it

Really does much good

I brushed my teeth an awful lot

I never missed a day

I didn’t mind the brushing then

But now I have some doubt

‘Cause I recall when I was five

All my teeth fell out!

SWIMMING IN THE SEA by Russ McKay

I’m not the biggest fan of swimming in the ocean

It’s mostly cold and salty and removes your tanning lotion

I’ll just sit here upon the shore and watch the others swim

It’s fun to see the little ones for the first time going in

Out there’s a place where sharks and fast rip tides abound

The shore is much the safer place… they can’t reach you on high ground

The sand is soft between my toes…my book begs to be read

My new sunglasses should stay dry and so should my bald head

Yes I much prefer to spectate atop granulated turf

But I understand the fun and charm of swimming in the surf

When you think of all the things that you and yours can do in it

Just remember all those fish out there…go number one and two in it!

THE SPYDA by Russ McKay

There once was a girl named Ida

When about to sit down she spied a

Large crawly thing

From the ground emerging

Caused her to exclaim “It’s a spyda!”

Well she was so scared she froze

So numb she could not feel her toes

The spyda kept crawling

It’s nearness appalling

Then it suddenly jumped on her clothes

Ida screamed the loudest you’ve ever heard

The spyda thought her loud screaming absurd

Because of her fears

He had to cover his ears

Even his eyesight was blurred

Well the townspeople all came to see

What the reason for screaming could be

Ida stricken with fear

As the people came near

Yelled “Somebody please help me!”

Then Ms. Froggy leaned over to Ida

Said “My Dear that’s only a spyda”

“No reason to hate him”

Ms. Froggy then ate him

Ida’s spyda was now deep insida

I’m the happy valentines heart
And I play an important part
I work one day a year
And my message is clear
And I’ve loved this job from the start

All the world’s lovers use me
To tell friends and family
How much they care
 I’m sent everywhere
I try to make them hap-py

Yet there’s only one day I’m seen
It’s on February fourteen
But lovers world ’round
Have always found
I’m also around in between

Does The Caterpillar Know?

Posted on February 7, 2017
Filed Under Tweens | Leave a Comment

When the caterpillar climbs up high
Checking out the dangerous sky
Watching hungry birds fly by

Does the caterpillar slowly wonder
Are there those which stop to ponder
What is it like to fly up yonder?

We humans know a thing or two
About strange changes those worms do
But we assume they’ve not got a clue

We’re so smart but we can’t be sure
That those caterpillars don’t know there’s more
And just what metamorphosis is for

It’s quite possible that when a butterfly
After taking wing high through the sky
Smiles at caterpillars as it flies by

Because butterfly’s know…and so do I.
