THINK PINK by Russ McKay

What would you think
If you were all pink
Except for your nose and your feet?
Oh ,and my non-pink legs
They’re as thin as pegs
But they keep feathers dry and that’s neat!
I stand in the pond
And I’m awfully fond
Of dipping my beak under water
My head’s upside down
And no, I won’t drown
‘Though to watch me you’d think that I oughta
I’m feeding that way
Straining food bits all day
Through small plates on the edge of my bill
There’s no other method
And the water is tepid
And keep eating that way I sure will
Eating shrimp makes me pinker
‘Though I’m not a great thinker
I believe Pink’s the perfect color
My pretty shade
I wouldn’t trade
For the hue of any other
My legs bend kinda strange
But they’re just rearranged
My ankle’s where your knee is on you
If they weren’t made this way
It would take me all day
To bend down the way that I do
I was born on a mound
Weighed under a pound
And I was an only child
All the Mommies like mine
Have one kid at a time
‘Though things still get kinda wild
There’s dozens of us
And we make quite a fuss
We mostly hang out in a crowd
When we’re together
In sunny weather
You’d think that we’re a pink cloud
And yes I can fly
It’s one way to get dry
But I prefer a lagoon
We eat drink and sleep
With no schedule to keep
We can do the same things sun or moon
Don’t think that we’re small
We’re large birds and grow tall
My Dad measures over five feet
I’ll get big too
I’ve some growing to do
I’ll be tall as him when complete
We’re a popular bird
But I have just heard
Something that is quite fantastic
‘Though I think it’s crass
People put on their grass
Flamingos made out of plastic!
