The Dog That Ate The Homework by Russ McKay

I’m the dog that ate the homework
I’m famous far and wide
And when my master leaves for school
His swallowed work’s inside

I’ve digested last night’s history
And mathematics too
Some nights I just can’t eat it all
There’s so much work to do

So I cover it with bite marks
Tear holes and rips throughout
And the teachers can’t tell whether
He did the work or not

And I’m getting kinda chubby
Overeating like I do
But it seems I just can’t help myself
I love paper, ink and glue

 And on those special mornings
Just as he goes out the door
He tries to find his homework
That he hid the night before

But I’d found it once again
I’d tracked it by the smell
After all I am a bloodhound
Finding…. I do well

He’s had long talks with me
And so’s his Mom and Dad
And ‘though I just can’t stop myself
I do feel kinda bad

But I think I know a way to stop
Eating homework like I do
I’ll eat each days newspaper
After it’s read through and through!
