New Baby Brother

Well they finally did it!

They brought him home today

My “bouncing baby brother”

As they like to say

I saw him in the nursery

Through the window there

I couldn’t see too much of him

Just his nose, forehead and hair

I guess I’ll just get used to

Having him around

He surely is a noisy thing

When they lay him down

I was such a happy baby

I was never sad

And I’ve grown up to be a good girl

I’m very rarely bad

But I just don’t understand

Why they think they need

A messy crying baby

Another mouth to feed

I’m tall enough to peek in

His crib and bassinette

And only when he’s sleeping

That’s close as I want to get

“What’s that Mom…

Me…hold him?”

“I really don’t…oh well

He’s looking right up at me

As far as I can tell”

“So this litle thing’s my brother

He’s being quiet now

You know…I think he likes me

He just yawned…Oh wow!”

“Can’t I just keep holding him

I like the way he feels

And his blue eyes are real pretty

They’re as big as seals”

“So…Hi there brother Billy

It’s almost time for lunch

I’m your sister Cathy

And I love you very much!”

“Cat Up A Tree” by silly grandpa

I spied a cat up in a tree

It was looking down at me

But when I smiled it turned away

And I didn’t know quite what to say

How’d you get there? I wanted to ask

It must have been quite a task!

I stood looking up from the ground

Wondering how the cat would get down

I didn’t know then, but it wondered too

And obviously did not know what to do

After both of us stared for quite a while

The cat finally began to smile

“Are you the Cheshire cat?” Was my query

But the feline was becoming weary

“I’ll climb up and help you down!”

But then the cat began to frown.

I took no mind and started up

And just as I got to the top

The feline jumped upon my back

Ran down to the ground and that’s a fact

I rested on the skinny top limb

By the way the cat was a him

Now I was the one who began to frown

Because I had no way to get myself down

I was feeling really really dumb

When the local firemen had to come

And help me get down from that tree

But then the cat began laughing at me

But that was not the story’s end

The once treed cat became my friend

We joked about the tree and me

And he at his regular place atop the tree

It’s a wonderful thing when a friend is found

And from now on we’ll both stay on the ground

I would like to be a Princess

That’s what I’d like to be

I’d have a castle and a throne

I’d be from royalty

My Dad and Mom

Would be King and Queen

I’d be the richest Princess

You have ever seen

But I was born in Cleveland

My Mom and Dad work hard

Our home is not a castle

Our moat is but a yard

There’s still a way that I could be

A Princess in my life

And that’s if I am married

To a Prince and I’m his wife

But just how do you find one?

Tell me where they hide

Do I have to find a castle

And then just look inside?

Of course he must be handsome

So he can’t look like a dog

Yes, there’s another way to get one

But I ain’t kissin’ any frog!!!

Three Little Doves by russ mckay

Three little doves lost their gloves

And didn’t know where to find them

They looked all around…in the tree…on the ground

They even looked right there behind them

They’d coo and coo

And wonder who

If anyone would ever find them

They retraced every step

Looked again where they’re kept…

Their gloves even had feathers that lined them

 Then…there on the chair

They found a small pair…no two…no THREE

Pairs of mittens

Then…yelling out to the doves

Three small cats wearing gloves

“You found them…we were thinking of quittin’!”

So the six swapped the gloves for the mittens

“We’d be sad if it weren’t for those kittens!”

The kittens agreed “Thank you doves indeed!

Those gloves of yours just weren’t fittin’!”

The Girl Who Couldn’t Sing by russ mckay

Susie was a pretty girl of seven
Her parents’ joyous gift from heaven
Susie had mostly everything
Well, except for one small thing
Susie couldn’t wouldn’t sing

Her parents singing in the shower
Could be heard ‘most any hour
Singing songs in perfect tune
They sang those songs July to June

And ‘though Susie sometimes tried to sing
Hands to ears her voice would bring
When Susie sang her tones would crackle
Sounds not unlike a witches cackle

She spent long hours in her room
Trying to just sing songs in tune
Each time she tried to sing on key
Even her stuffed toys would flee

Her parents hired a music teacher
Whose previous successes were a feature
But the teacher quit one day at noon
Saying “This poor child can’t carry a tune!”

Through her tears, Susie tried
To smile and pretend she hadn’t cried
And ‘though she would always yearn and yearn
Singing is something she’d never learn

But Susie just would try and try
‘Though she sang as well as she could fly
Then suddenly on one frosty morn
Susie’s musical talent was born

She was sitting on her Mother’s lap
When Susie broke out into a “Rap”
She had the beat she had rhythm too
This was “music” she loved to do

It’s been a while now since that day
Now Susie “raps” from June to May
She’s sold a million records too
Perhaps you’ve heard of “Little Sue”

A Letter FROM Santa

Dear Boys and Girls…and Moms and Dads too
This is the first time I’m writing to YOU
The world has grown bigger and Santa has too
So I have a favor to ask all of you
‘Though I LOVE your gifts of cookies, milk and all that
Please try to leave fewer ’cause I’m getting too fat
Oh I’ve always been heavy Mrs. Claus tells me so
But there is a limit for my belly to grow
Chimneys are narrow ‘though I WISH there were wide
I’m finding it harder to get down inside
I COULD climb through a window or come in through a door
But if I do, there goes the folklore
It’s a modern world and I am traditional
So I cannot change and one thing additional
As I finish this letter I’ll make one more plea
Despite what you’re told…keep believing in me

Christmas Gift by russ mckay

A gift at Christmas brings joy all around
After both getting and giving
There’s one thing I’ve found
It needn’t be perfect
It needn’t be grand
Nor be expensive
Or be the best in the land
The truest of presents is the thought that’s behind
A gift from an unselfish heart that is kind
The REAL present is when you begin to perceive
It really IS better to give than receive

How Santa Got His Red Suit by russ mckay

About the time that the North Pole elves gave Santa (formerly Kris Kringle) his famous name, Mrs. Kringle….ah…CLAUS told him that he needed a distinctive suit to wear on that special night.
All the elves and of course Santa agreed that it was a good idea but nobody…and I mean NO one could agree on the style and color.
Oh there were many suggestions about Robes and Parkas and even green tights…(that one obviously came from the Elves) and all agreed that there should be fur trimming too. (But NOT Caribou fur. Everyone and especially the reindeer, which are actually caribou themselves, unanimously agreed!)
Being an excellent seamstress as well as a VERY understanding wife, Mrs. Claus had a cupboard chock full of bolts of fabric in many colors, including in fact all of the colors of the rainbow.
Mrs. Claus held up samples of fabric under Santa’s chin to see how each color suited Santa’s coloring and svelte shape.
The Elves loved EVERY one, so of course their opinion was dismissed by Mrs. Claus (remember the tights suggestion?).
Well the white fabric almost made Santa disappear…sort of North Pole camouflage…and that just wouldn’t do.
No green…that was an Elf color…and the blue…well…picture a giant blueberry if you will.
The yellow was pretty good but the Elves couldn’t stop snickering and muttering something about “The Lemon That Ate The North Pole”
After that… I’m sure you all can guess what the Elves thought of Santa in an Orange suit.
Purple?…”NO!” Santa didn’t even allow his wife to hold that fabric anywhere near him.
There was one bolt of fabric left…all together now…. that’s right…RED!
“What do you think?” Mrs. Claus asked Santa.
“Hmmmm”….hmmmm’d Santa. And as he looked around all the Elves were nodding their pointy capped heads and gathering close by Santa.
“Ah…yes I like…no…I LOVE it!” exclaimed Santa.
“Whew!” the relieved Mrs. Claus sighed, and then set about to make the famous suit that Santa is never publicly seen without.
And in spite of what one Elf whispered upon first seeing Santa in his new red suit…Fire Engines are VERY masculine!

Turtle In A Tree

Did you ever see
A turtle in a tree?
Not me!
Because you see…
I don’t think there COULD be
A turtle in a tree
Because we know very well
A turtle in a shell
Wouldn’t WANT to be
Up any tree
Turtles can be found
On the ground
And if you are around
They are bound
To hide
Inside
Their shell
That fits so well
As far as I can tell
So if you see
A turtle up a tree
Please do something for me
Get it down
On to the ground

Thanksgiving Wishes

I extend to the cook my Thanksgiving wishes

Then disappear while she does the dishes

I tiptoe quietly in silent footfall

To my den to watch some football

. A cozy chair big screen TV

As thankful as I’ll ever be

Each year to see if just ONCE I can

Overcome heavy doses of Tryptophan
