TOY BOAT by Russ McKay

I built my first boat model

I bet it goes real fast

It’s a pretty sailboat

With one tall center mast

I followed the directions

With some help from Dad

When we both were finished

Boy we both were glad

It was fun to build it

And it’s so much fun to see

we both accomplished

Both my Dad and me

Well we took it to the lake today

For its maiden sail

The breeze was right the water calm

We named the boat “Prevail”

We put it in the water

Then “Prevail” began to lean

But we forgot to glue the keel

It became a submarine!

Mother Nature by Russ McKay

Oh I DO love Mother Nature
The land…the sky…the sea
And I love almost all her animals
And insects too…I even love the bee

I don’t ALWAYS love the weather
That she sends my way
But all in all I love it all
Even though there’s rain all day

We all should love Mother Nature
Cause we’re as natural as can be
Yes I love her but I wonder…
What she thinks of me.

A HAPPY VALENTINE’s Heart by Russ McKay

I’m the happy valentines heart
And I play an important part
I work one day a year
And my message is clear
And I’ve loved this job from the start

All the world’s lovers use me
To tell friends and family
How much they care
I’m sent everywhere
I try to make them hap-py

Yet there’s only one day I’m seen
It’s on February fourteen
But lovers world ’round
Have always found
I’m also around in between

The Allergic Bee

I’m a worker bee

But I am not hap-py

You see I’m allergic to honey

When the honey’s too thick

I start to get sick

And all over I start feeling funny

My skin starts to itch

And I can’t help but twitch

It’s important a worker survives

So I have to take care

Fly out…get some air

When I start to break out in hives!

The “I Don’t Know About….” Book

IF i wrote a book about all the tings that I don’t know about

In infinite detail…my ignorance I would tout

I’d have to research all manner of things on subjects I don’t know

It would be methodical…the process would be slow

And at the end of many years of learning what I didn’t know before

I’d wind up knowing everything and wouldn’t need to know no more!

New Baby Brother by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

Well they finally did it!

They brought him home today

My “bouncing baby brother”

As they like to say

I saw him in the nursery

Through the window there

I couldn’t see too much of him

Just his nose, forehead and hair

I guess I’ll just get used to

Having him around

He surely is a noisy thing

When they lay him down

I was such a happy baby

I was never sad

And I’ve grown up to be a good girl

I’m very rarely bad

But I just don’t understand

Why they think they need

A messy crying baby

Another mouth to feed

I’m tall enough to peek in

His crib and bassinette

And only when he’s sleeping

That’s close as I want to get

“What’s that Mom…

Me…hold him?”

“I really don’t…oh well

He’s looking right up at me

As far as I can tell”

“So this litle thing’s my brother

He’s being quiet now

You know…I think he likes me

He just yawned…Oh wow!”

“Can’t I just keep holding him

I like the way he feels

And his blue eyes are real pretty

They’re as big as seals”

“So…Hi there brother Billy

It’s almost time for lunch

I’m your sister Cathy

And I love you very much!”

Writing Poetry Is Easy by Russ McKay

I decided I’d write poetry
It’s an easy thing to do
You just have to make sure that
The last words rhyme…ah…too!

Heck you could write of anything
As long as you remember
That that last word in each key line
Rhymes with the one…ah..befember.

And don’t forget an important thing
Poetry has a meter
Kind of like the beat of a song
A cadence, pace or natural flow or..ah..rhythmter

Anyway, poetry is a beautiful thing
It lifts our spirits high
Anyone can be a poet
All you need do is…attempt it!

THE MAGIC GIFT by Russ McKay

As Santa returned from his worldwide tour

Mrs. Claus met him at the Polar front door

“You look tired my Dear more than last year

I hope all went well and I’m glad you are here!”

“May I get you some tea or a sandwich to eat?”

“No…I’m full of cookies and I’m dead on my feet!”

As Santa rested in his big easy chair

He noticed a large package…”What is that there?”

“Did I not gift some girl or some boy…

A small child that I’ve failed to bring Christmas joy?”

“No Dear…not at all!” Mrs. Claus then replied

“It was brought by someone who left it outside!”

The tag said ” To Santa…Father Christmas…St. Nick…

And whomever left it was quiet and quick!”

“Ah that I was as quiet and quick as before

I was almost seen at three houses or four!”

“Perhaps I’ve gotten too old for this task

Each Christmas I wonder…Will this be my last?”

“Well it would be nice if you were younger that’s true

In just one evening there’s so much to do!”

“But open your package it’s your first present ever!”

“No one sends Santa a present…no never !”

Santa ripped the gift wrapping off like a child

Excitement danced in his eyes like fire wild

Then suddenly a great light shone from within

The gift was so bright it made the sun seem quite dim

And after a minute the light quickly went black

Knocking Santa over, he lay flat on his back!

“Oh my Dear are you all right…

That package had an unworldly light?”

Santa leaped high up…two feet off the ground!

“Yes Dear I think…I think I’m all sound”

“What?…Did you see that…did you see what I did?”

“I jumped off that floor like I was a…kid!”

“Oh yes Dear I saw that and you look younger too!”

“I feel full of life and…well…I feel NEW!”

And then Santa kissed her as they both shed a tear

“I’m so excited I can’t wait for next year!”

Grand Kid’s Chat by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

As Grand kids grow older they change very fast
Yes “Two weeks ago”…well that was the past
Being a Grandpa today has many trials
But all that you’re after are one of “Those Smiles”

They get taller and cuter and quicker and smarter
If a Grandpa wants answers then he’s gotta barter
They also learn things that you have forgot
If you EVER did know them…probably not

When talking to Dannie…Zoology’s her thing
If chatting with Lucy great books are the king
Now Gigi loves Science…not one of my fields
And Gus loves Gymnastics…my head’s over heels

Jonathan and Star Wars are so closely linked
He’ll spout twenty facts before I have blinked
John Scot Junior always knows what is newest
And my knowledge of new things is one of my fewest

When talking to Judson Silly’s the game
But I’m up for that ’cause it’s part of my name
And then there is Sarah too young to converse
But she is so cute that I want to write verse

All Eight of my grandkids are God’s great blessing
And I love them all dearly…of that I’m confessing

The Christmas Stocking by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

All of my socks are but a size two

They wouldn’t hold much so I knew what to do

I borrowed my Grandpa’s…his feet are real big

And I hope that Dear Santa doesn’t think I’m a pig!

I hung Grandpa’s stocking by the chimney with care

If I’d hung up size two…well it wouldn’t be fair

Most kids I know hang socks that are huge

I hope no one thinks that I’m being a scrooge

But I have something that I want to report

And I’ll try to make this long story short

When I woke up early last Christmas morn

Left instead of my sock was one that was torn

It was all red and fuzzy with a tear in the toe

It looked like it had been left out in the snow

And there was a note on the table nearby

It was written by Santa and it started out “Hi…

“…I hope you don’t mind and your Grandfather too

But I tore my stocking when I slipped on your roof

So I borrowed your sock to aid me tonight

To help keep my toes warm and solve my small plight”

Well I thought Santa’s sock was the best gift ever

And I told lots of folks but…believe me? NEVER!

But I know it’s true and it’s just like I said

It’s Santa’s real stocking and it’s really quite red!

But the neatest of all I’ve yet to tell

About three days later I heard the door bell

It was UPS and a guy dressed in brown

“I’ve a package from North Pole’s Lost and Found

Sign here if you want it”…and so I did

Then guess what was there when I opened the lid?

Yep! Grandpa’s stocking…as good as new

And a note signed by Santa that just said “Thank You!”
