THE MAGIC NICKEL MACHINE by Russ McKay

I have a neighbor Mr. Will
Who has a neat device
It turns your pennies into nickels
I’ve watched him do it twice
It really is a great machine
And it works every time
The only problem with it is
He charges you a dime!
THREE LITTLE DOVES by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

Three little doves lost their gloves
And didn’t know where to find them
They looked all around…in the tree…on the ground
They even looked right there behind them
They’d coo and coo
And wonder who
If anyone would ever find them
They retraced every step
Looked again where they’re kept…
Their gloves even had feathers that lined them
Then…there on the chair
They found a small pair…no two…no THREE
Pairs of mittens
Then…yelling out to the doves
Three small cats wearing gloves
“You found them…we were thinking of quittin’!”
So the six swapped the gloves for the mittens
“We’d be sad if it weren’t for those kittens!”
The kittens agreed “Thank you doves indeed!
Those gloves of yours just weren’t fittin’!”
MY NEW BACKPACK by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

My parents bought me a new backpack for school
It’s pink and lilac and looks really cool
The first morning it was loaded with lunch, school supplies and stuff
And anything I’d need to be sure I had enough
I was ready to go as I stood at our door
My backpack so full it wouldn’t hold any more
Mommy put it on me and fastened the last strap
And when she stepped away I fell flat on my back
My brother came over to help me up on my feet
And as I turned around I knocked him right on his seat
Mommy helped me unload about half of the stuff
So that carrying the thing wouldn’t be quite so tough
I learned you’ve really got to be strong when you’re starting school
And I think it might help if you owned your own mule
THE LITTLE CLOUD by Russ McKay

Though I am just a little cloud
I’m fluffy and billowy and very proud
If I keep growing then I guess
I’ll become a big old cumulus
And float with my friends so you can peer us
And tell us apart from those wispy cirrus
We cumulus clouds have the most status
We’re not stringy and gray like those skimpy stratus
You can tell I like being what I am
And I like changing shapes which I can
Down on the ground as you gaze on high
You’ll be guessing what I look like as I fly by
But if I get noisy and turn grey/blue
I’ll be getting ready to rain on you
But don’t take shelter under a tree
‘Cause lightning bolts might come from me
I’d much rather float in the sun up high
Looking like cotton shapes in the sky
So when you see me wave and say Hey
And I’ll save my rain for another day
THE BARKING DUCK by Russ McKay (aka sillygrandpa.com)

As I was walking in the park
I heard a loud distinctive bark
“That’s a big dog behind me I suppose”
But it was a DUCK without any clothes
He waddled and was brown with a big black beak
But I was amazed when I heard him start to speak
He got really close and said “Pardon me Sir…
But might you have a lozinger?”
Then he “barked” again that bark of his
While I looked in my bag for some lozenges
Then there in the back I found a whole pack
And as he ate them he started to quack
“Oh thank you kind Sir” and he waddled away
He quacked at the kids as he passed their way
He was quacking happily as he plunged into the pond
And I yelled out to him “Now get some clothes on!”
First Day Of School by Russ McKay

It’s my first day at school
And I don’t want to go
My Mommy said “Yes!”
And I said..”No…No!”
After a while
My complaining was done
And once again,
Mommy had won
“Goodbye Sandy, my dog”
“Goodbye Croaky my frog”
Goodbye to all my stuffed friends
I must go to school
That is the rule
And I’ll be all grown up when it ends.
The school bus was late
It made me wait
And it was noisy and cold
The driver was there
He didn’t have hair
And he was grumpy and old
My teacher Miss Deane
Seemed really mean
She made all the boys keep still
Then she said to some girls

We played games that were fun
And when lunch was done
It was time to leave school for the day

She said “I’m afraid so.”

I’m in my second childhood
Doin’ what a child would
Didn’t think I ever could
Be this bad and it be so good
Yes I’m as bad as I can be
‘Cause I report to only me
So I suppose that you can see
What Good livin’s done for me
I’m always up at the crack of noon
Unless of course that is too soon
My bedtime’s early…never stay out late
Right after sunrise and always by eight
I don’t recommend this type of life
Especially if you have a wife
But mine’s understanding to the extreme
Oh wait…I just woke up and that was a dream
BABY TALK by Russ McKay

Jibber, Jabber, jibber
Is how it sounds to you
But just between us babies
It’s “Hey there Bud what’s new?”
You see we have a language
We infants fresh as dew
But we only use it when we see
Other babes who see us too
And we don’t like huge bulging heads
That suddenly appear
Staring down upon us
Too big and way too near
And what’s that you are saying?
Sounds faintly like some words we use
We like your smiles and funny face
But what’s with those “Goo Goo’s”?
It’s easy chatting babies up
We’re a friendly bunch
The only time we’ll stop our talking
Is when it’s time for lunch!
But the real tough thing for us is
Right before we’re two
We must learn a whole new language
Just to talk to you!
TRIP TO THE DENTIST by Russ McKay

I have to go to the dentist today
And Boy, I just can’t wait
There are toys and games in the waiting room
It’s gonna be just great
They’ll be lots of other children there
Waiting for their turn
But I might just be the only one
Happy to return
I wasn’t smiling late last week
I had my back tooth drilled
And it didn’t feel much better
When I had to have it filled
But I’m looking forward to today
I’m as happy as can be
‘Cause today I’m not the patient
It’s my sister Melanie!

I’m not like a dragon that has a fiery sneeze
And I’m not like a Pterodactyl floating on a breeze
I don’t have colorful scales like those upon a Koi
No I’m not like one of those…’cause I am just a boy
I like to play with Legos and have fun with Pokemon
And I like it when there are big rocks that I can climb upon
I guess I’m kinda like all boys at least that’s what I am told
I don’t know what I wanna be when I get to be so old
But I am sure of one thing that I’ll share with you
Just because I like the same things that most boys like to do
It doesn’t mean that I’m not special you could even say “Unique”
And that goes for all you guys whether sporty or a geek
Every one of us is the only one like us (unless you are a twin)
And there never was or will be a boy like us again
I’m very thankful that there’s no one like me in this whole wide world
But most of all I’m thankful that… I am not a GIRL!
