Hand Me Downs by russ mckay

I’m youngest in my family of eight
‘Though my brothers and sisters are great
Except those times rare
I ‘ve nothing new I can wear
If I like something I simply must wait

The trouble with hand me downs
Is I’ve already seen them around
Jane wears it new
Then it passes to Sue
My closet’s a lost and found

I don’t have to wear clothes of my Mother’s
And they don’t make me wear my brother’s
I’d enjoy my clothes more
If I shopped at the store
Instead I get those worn by others

If I had my way I’d require
Only new things for my attire
Then my siblings would be
Wearing hand ups from me
And I bet that would raise their Ire!

But I guess it’s not really so bad
I’ve got clothes so I shouldn’t be sad
Some poor children out there
Have nothing to wear
So after all I guess I’m quite glad

“Burp” The Swine by russ mckay

Hi! I’m Burp and yes I’m a swine
And the pleasure of meeting you is just divine
And just because I’m a swine and big
Doesn’t mean that you need to call me a “PIG”

I’ve heard people say “Those PIGS just stink”
But under all that mud we’re mostly pink
Our table manners are slight cause we don’t use a fork
And, around us, please never say the word “PORK”

We squeel and we grunt and we root around
And our farmer’s happy as we gain every pound
I agree that we’re overweight and possibly fat
It seems we’re always eating so I’ll admit that

I see you like snacking when you’re reading a rhyme
And I bet you do it nearly all of the time
But to think we’ll eat anything is a big mistake
By the way are you planning to eat all that cake?

I decided I’d write poetry

It’s an easy thing to do

You just have to make sure that

The last words rhyme…ah…too!

Heck you could write of anything

As long as you remember

That the last word in each key line

Rhymes with the one…ah..befember.

All you need do is…attempt it!

The Little Girl Wo Couldn’t Sing by russ mckay

Susie was a pretty girl of seven
Her parents’ joyous gift from heaven
Susie had mostly everything
Well, except for one small thing
Susie couldn’t, wouldn’t sing

Her parents singing in the shower
Could be heard most any hour
Singing songs in perfect tune
They sang those songs July to June

And ‘though Susie sometimes tried to sing
Hands to ears her voice would bring
When Susie sang her tones would crackle
Sounding not unlike a witches cackle

She spent long hours in her room
Trying to sing simple songs in tune
Each time she tried to sing in key
Even her stuffed toys would flee

Her parents hired a music teacher
Whose previous successes were a feature

But Susie just would try and try
‘Though she sang as well as she could fly
Then suddenly on one frosty morn
Susie’s musical talent was born

She was sitting on her Mother’s lap
When Susie broke out into a “Rap”
She had the beat she had rythm too
This was “music” she loved to do

It’s been a while now since that day
Now Susie “raps” from June to May
She’s sold a million records too

HUMILITY by russ mckay

Being ” humble” should be our goal
From childhood up that’s what we’re told
But it gets tougher as you grow old
Your past triumphs are just like gold

You want to tell all you’ve done
And all the prizes that you’ve won
And you think that it is really fun
To boast about a life well run

But it gets tough to find a listener
An attention paying true parishioner
Most have heard your tales before
When you arrive…they’re out the door
Yes it’s far better to be humble
Not being so’s a social stumble

I tell you this from experience
I’d start to talk, they’d start to wince
But I kept going just the same
They didn’t think I knew their game
I was never burdened with humility
What I seek in others is not in me

Although my recent audience
Now numbers less than few
It seems that I’ve just one reader left
And I’m so sorry…but it’s you!

Mom makes me clean my plate

I wish foods tasted like dessert

The Christmas Stocking by russ mckay

All of my socks are but a size two
They wouldn’t hold much so I knew what to do
I borrowed my Grandpa’s…his feet are real big
And I hope that Dear Santa doesn’t think I’m a Pig!

I hung Grandpa’s stocking by the chimney with care
If I’d hung up size two…well it wouldn’t be fair
Most kids I know hang socks that are HUGE
I hope no one thinks that I’m being a Scrooge

But I have something that I want to report
And I’ll try to make this long story short
When I woke up early last Christmas morn
Left instead of MY sock was one that was worn

It was all red and fuzzy with a tear in the toe
It looked like it had been left out in the snow
And there was a note on the table nearby
It was written by Santa and it started out “HI…

“…I hope you don’t mind and your Grandfather too
But I tore my stocking when I slipped on your roof
So I borrowed your sock to aid me tonight
To help keep my toes warm and solve my small plight”

Well I thought Santa’s sock was the best gift EVER
And I told lots of folks but…believe me?…NEVER!
But I know it’s true and it’s just like I said
It’s Santa’s real stocking and it’s really quite red!

But the neatest of all I’ve yet to tell
About three days later I heard the doorbell
It was UPS and a guy dressed in brown
“I have a package from the North Pole’s Lost and Found

Sign here if you want it”…and so I did
Then guess what was there when I opened the lid?
YEP! Grandpa’s stocking…as good as new
And a note from Santa that just read “Thank You!”
