When I Grow Up by russ mckay

When I grow up what will I be?
What will the future hold for me?
I like odd coins so on my list
It’s possible to become a numismatist
And I also like birds so I could see
Myself at a school of ornothology
And though reptiles are fascinating to me
I don’t think I’ll study herpetology
I could be a fireman or policeman or engineer
And I’ve only been thinking ’bout this since last year
There’s only one thing certain that I can say
When I grow up I’ll be older than I am today
New Baby Brother by russ mckay

Well they finally did it!
They brought him home today
My “bouncing baby brother”
As they like to say
I saw him in the nursery
Through the window there
I couldn’t see too much of him
Just his nose, forehead and hair
I guess I’ll just get used to
Having him around
He surely is a noisy thing
When they lay him down
I was such a happy baby
I was never sad
And I’ve grown up to be a good girl
I’m very rarely bad
But I just don’t understand
Why they think they need
A messy crying baby
Another mouth to feed
I’m tall enough to peek in
His crib and bassinette
And only when he’s sleeping
That’s close as I want to get
“What’s that Mom…
Me…hold him?”
“I really don’t…oh well
He’s looking right up at me
As far as I can tell”
“So this litle thing’s my brother
He’s being quiet now
You know…I think he likes me
He just yawned…Oh wow!”
“Can’t I just keep holding him
I like the way he feels
And his blue eyes are real pretty
They’re as big as seals”
“So…Hi there brother Billy
It’s almost time for lunch
I’m your sister Cathy
And I love you very much!”
The Secret by russ mckay

I know a great big secret
I can’t say what it’s about
I wish that I could let you know
Then there would be no doubt
You’d think my well kept secret
Was amazing and so true
It’s the greatest secret ever
That I can’t tell to you
You can beg me, you can coax me
You could threaten me with harm
You could refuse to talk to me
You could even twist my arm
I’d never tell this secret
That I promised not to tell
No matter what may happen
I’ll keep the secret well
Finally, I’m glad she’s gone
Now it’s just us two
Put your ear up close to me
And I’ll tell it all to you
But you must keep the secret
Cross your heart and say you will
‘Cause if we don’t keep the secrets
Is there anyone who will?
Pony’s Birthday by russ mckay

There once was a white pony named “Whirl”
Who had a mane that was long and would curl
He was a small breed horse
And for his birthday of course
He was lonely and wanted a girl
Well his parents said “No way!”
“You can’t have a girl this birthday”
“Something you really don’t need
And they’re too hard to feed”
Both his parents shook heads and said “Naaay!”
Whirl was understandably sad
“I’ve got a really mean Mom and Dad!”
He had to figure a way
To get a girl this birthday
Or it’d be the worst one he’d EVER had
Whirl kept asking to no avail
His Father swished him away with his tail
“My back’s always bare
I need a girl riding up there!”
But all of his pleas seemed to fail
Then one day to the stable came a girl
She exclaimed the instant she saw Whirl
“Daddy please buy that pony for me
I’ll take care of it you’ll see!”
“And I want to name it Pearl”
Her Father said “Ponies are hard to feed
And we really don’t have a need
A pony’s not a toy…
And besides…he’s a boy
So Pearl is a bad name indeed!”
As the girl was petting his mane
The pony whispered his name
“Oh Dad… exclaimed the girl
His real name is Whirl!”
“And see…he’s very tame”
Then her Father finally said “OK”
“You can have Whirl for your birthday!”
The girl shouted with glee
And Whirl gave out a “Whinee!”
The pair are happy still to this day
Tailless Cats by russ mckay

Did you know there is a breed
Of cats that have no tails?
It took a lot of research
Seeing why this trait prevails
It happened many years ago
On porches by the sea
Upon an Island known as Man
It was said to be
The people there were restful
Loved to watch the scenery
But the people were out numbered
Friendly felines seemed to be…
Always near the old folks
Taking in the view
The cats would laze along porch floors
As cats are prone to do
But it started causing problems
There was screeching everywhere
So the felines cut their tails off
To avoid those rocking chairs!

Once upon a time there was a King
Who didn’t seem to know anything
He was thought by some
To be very dumb
He never would talk but he did sing
Well one day a little boy
Asked the King if he’d like a toy
The King nodded his head
And still nothing was said
By the way the child’s name was Roy
Roy and the King’s friendship was true
Of the friendship soon everyone knew
And though in the castle…some
Still thought the King Dumb
Roy said “After all…he’s only two!”
Hanky And Panky and Hunkey And Dory

There once were four friends who always hung out together
They could be found around no matter the weather
You might think that friends would all act the same
But not this bunch, that’s how each got their name
You see Hanky and Panky would just sneak around
Looking for trouble that they ALWAYS found
While Hunky and Dory looked for ways to be nice
In fact when they did a good deed they’d do it twice
So why and how were they all good friends
Did you think friendship needs sameness and on likeness depends
Well friends can be different in word and in deed
As long as they like one other and are there in times of need
So think about your friends and how different they are
And if you’ve got lots of ’em you are lucky by far
But you must remember times when friends helped you
‘Cause there are plenty of times when they need you too
Are you more like Hanky and Panky and often in trouble
Or like Hunky and Dory doing good things by double?
Writing Up A Storm by russ mckay

Eric Smith was smiling after his favorite teacher complimented him on his creative writing. She suggested that if he wanted to become an excellent writer, he should try to “…write every single day. Write up a storm Eric!”
Well, to Eric’s creative mind, this also meant writing a story about a storm!
As our boy was sitting at his home keyboard he started out by writing…”The sun disappeared behind a great grey cloud and within a matter of seconds, lightning began lighting up the afternoon sky above the boy’s home.”
Eric stopped typing because he heard rumbling sounds not only coming from outside but rattling the window panes.
As Eric looked outside, the sun had disappeared behind a great grey cloud and it was beginning to rain.
“NAW!” Eric thought. But then…what if…? He typed…”Suddenly the sun burst through the huge cloud and the rain stopped, the lightning stopped and of course, the thunder ceased.”
When he looked back outside the sun WAS back and the rainstorm was GONE!
“Hmmmm.” He, just like you would do, tried it again and the same result happened.
So, of course, Eric wrote of a sunny day of 72 degrees and as soon as he typed the last period he went outside to play!
When Eric woke up the next morning, it was raining and he hadn’t written “up a storm” as he did the day before.
So, the magic of “storm writing” only lasted one afternoon but it was huge fun and helped Eric Smith decide exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up…a meteorologist!
Ballet Recital by russ mckay

A season of practice and rehearsals too
Learning routines and what to do
Studying five positions of ballet dancing
Lots of ballet slippers prancing
All easy… BUT the arabesque standing…
On one foot
Partial piroettes and not quite a “grand” jete
“OK girls…enough for today”
A four year old in a tu tu too
Ballet dancing is all so new
And after thirty weeks of dancing lessons
Nearly all were total fun filled sessions
It was time to show the parents…
All they’d learned
Costumes…makeup…new ballerinas
Show everyone their ballet genius
The audience loves every move they make
Moms and Dads see no mistake
And then the finale ends the show
Girls and parents already know
All the ballerinas of this night’ll
Always remember that recital
Fathers with arms full of roses
Waiting for daughters’ bows and poses
Mothers smile wide and hide a tear
Dancers looking forward to next year
The Elephant Bird by russ mckay

Have you ever heard
Of the elephant bird?
It’s a wonder that it can fly
The first time I heard
I thought it absurd
In fact, I thought it a lie
But after some trying
A birdbook I was eyeing
Said “Exist? They really do!”
But don’t worry they’re rare
And you don’t need to care
Unless one flies over you
