My granddaughter called yesterday to say
All her fourth grade grades were “A”
I said “great” and was full of pride
Then MY fourth grade scores I did confide

Many years ago I did the same
By working hard the “A”s just came
I recall in Math I got A “c”
My best subject…History I got A “d”

And if that is not eneff
In Spelling and English I got A ” f “

Grandma’s House by russ mckay

I love to go to Grandma’s house
And Grandpa lives there too
Though they’re not young like Mom and Dad
There’s always something new

Mommy’s Mom and Daddy
Are Grand in every way
And I am a Grand daughter
I’ll make Mom Grand too some day

Pictures of her as a little girl
Are all around the place
In some of those she looks like me
Especially in the face

There’s tons of cake and candy
That are a “secret” treat
And there’s lots of toys but none for boys
And I think that’s really neat!

Grandma takes me shopping
And Grandpa drives the car
We’re always taking little trips
But we never go real far

Sometimes when we’re playing
Grandpa holds his back
“That’s all the “Horsey” for today!…
How ’bout we have a snack?”

And when the weekend’s over
“It’s time to go back home” I’m told
I always make them promise
Never ever to get old!

Synonyms and Homonyms

Synonyms and Homonyms
I am so confused
Not sure about the meanings
Not sure how they are used
One means the same thing as the other
But the other sounds the same
I use examples all the time
But I’m not sure of which name

When I read the word “reed”
Or words like “him” and “hymn”
And I write the word “right”
I know they’re all “onym”
I do know how to spell ’em
By the sentence that they’re in
And it’s easy to pronounce them
But I’m not sure “Hom” or “Syn”

And ravel and unravel
Both meanings are the same
Flammable, inflammable
Is this someone’s silly game?
I thought that math was difficult
But English is harder still
And when it comes to all these ‘nyms”
I have had my Phil!

Humility by russ mckay

Being ” humble” should be our goal
From childhood up that’s what we’re told
But it gets tougher as you grow old
Your past triumphs are just like gold

You want to tell all you’ve done
And all the prizes that you’ve won
And you think that it is really fun
To boast about a life well run

But it gets tough to find a listener
An attention paying true parishioner
Most have heard your tales before
When you arrive…they’re out the door
Yes it’s far better to be humble
Not being so’s a social stumble

I tell you this from experience
I’d start to talk, they’d start to wince
But I kept going just the same
They didn’t think I knew their game
I was never burdened with humility
What I seek in others is not in me

Although my recent audience
Now numbers less than few
It seems that I’ve just one reader left
And I’m sorry…but it’s you!

My Beautiful Weed by sillygrandpa.com

One spring I decided to plant some seed

My garden was flowerless and in great need

As they began to bloom I gave extra feed

But they were outshone by one glorious weed

The reddest red and the greenest green

The most beautiful plant I’d ever seen

That weed made my flowers look sick

It’s lush petals were long and thick

Even the bees and birds came to see

How lovely this weed had come to be

Then all of my neighbors stopped by and took note

And the garden editor of the newspaper wrote

“The most wondrous of horticulture indeed!”

She also asked me to save her some seed

And the man from the nursery was a visitor

He turned out to be a vociferous inquisitor

I watered and fed, kept the surround of it clear

It grew more handsome as the Autumn drew near

The flowers all wilted and grew ugly and brown

But my beautiful weed just stood its ground

Then it finally happened on the first night of frost

By the next morning my weed’s beauty was lost

It never did bloom in my garden again

And I miss my weed like I’d miss a friend

But my newest garden is flowered and lively

With a lush green crop of poison ivy

Dragonflies

Dragonflies have been around longer than history
Where we came from is still quite a mystery
I bet our old age surprises you
I’ll tell you a secret…it surprises us too
We’re a friendly bunch and we don’t sting or bite
And we soar to treetops no matter the height
We can hover and turn around so fast
You’ll see us coming then “WHOOSH” we’ve passed
Yes we are the masters of the sky
Even taught hummingbirds how to fly
So when you see a dragonfly fly by
Give us a wave and just say “Hi

I can’t say “CIM NA BIN”

But I like to eat the stuff it’s in

Mommy says for sure one day

It WILL be easy for me to say…

That word that is so hard for me

So I just point to it when I see…

The shaker up there on the shelf

‘Cause I can’t reach up there by myself

I wish that I could say “Cinnamon”

“WOW!” I just did and it was FUN!

So I’ll say just one thing more

Forget that stuff I said before!

Living In A Shoe by russ mckay

There once was a family named Bleeker
All six of them lived in a sneaker
It was a giant size
And their home they did prize
But when it rained it was a leaker

When they bought it they got a good deal
But the problems they had were quite real
When the rain started in
“Let the mopping begin!”
Mrs. Bleeker would yell from the heel

The kids thought the house was real neat
Living there was a real feat
The roof had this big hole
Staying dry the main goal
They would never give up in defeat

In summer the sneaker got hot
Air conditioning they had not!
And you couldn’t go
Down into the toe
That room smelled bad as it got!

When the Bleekers grew up, moved away
The sneaker began to decay
It was torn down
And they built on that ground
A new high heeled pump that was gray!

FAME by russ mckay

I was admittedly proud when I heard the news

I said “Well someone FINALLY agrees I have paid my dues!”

They would feature my picture in a national ad

So I sent them the best one that I had

I waited with great anticipation

The long two months until publication

. Then the day finally came and so did the mail

The nation would see me and all would hail

I flipped through the pages and there it was

At first happy but my mood changed because

Although I got what I was looking for

Under my picture it just read “BEFORE”

The Lost Easter Egg by russ mckay

The day started out real nice
I was happy fresh and new
Brightly colored on my shell
That boiling thing was through

I was resting in a basket
With other eggs so fancy
We were placed there very carefully
By our 8 year old named Nancy

We jiggled ’round as we took a ride
To the grassy park in town
Then we each in turn were gently placed
And hidden on the ground

It was very hard to see beyond
Those real high blades of grass
But I felt very comfortable
As the time did pass

Then I heard the squeeling children
Getting closer to my place
I saw as some went by me
I even saw their face

But they all passed and let me be
Maybe I’m too small
I have no arms to part the grass
No feet to help stand tall

Then the noises became distant
And soon no more were heard
“Hey anyone… Please find me!”
But I couldn’t speak a word

There was nothing I could do
To make myself be seen

And although I was brightly dyed
I was hidden by grass green

The sun went down and it got cold
And it was growing dark
The happy kids had long since gone
And left me in the park

All the other eggs were warm and safe
And happy they were found I bet
They were comfortable in their new homes
Being treated like a pet

But as I fought to stay upbeat
And pretend I’m in my bed
I spied a pair of familiar feet
“There you are!” my Nancy said

She picked me up and rescued me
She warmed me with her hand
She carried me back home with her
And put me on a stand

“I’m so glad that you weren’t found”
As she smiled and looked at me
‘Cause you’re my favorite one of all
The Easter eggs I see!”

I’ve got a place of honor
On the center shelf
We’re both happy that I wasn’t found
Nancy and myself
