CLEANING MY ROOM by Russ McKay

My Mom said” You can’t go to play
‘Til you clean up your room today
It’s messy and wrong
And it’s been so long
Do it now without delay!”

I didn’t think my room looked so bad
It’s the only one I’ve ever had
It might take more than a day
I might never go play
I started to really feel sad

And then as I looked around
I noticed my bed off the ground
There was so much stuff under
It is a wonder
It could balance on top of that mound

So I decided to start
Maybe Mom will help if I do my part
I began pulling out junk
I even found a dead skunk
And some of last century’s art

I was pulling out more and more
Of stuff that I’d not seen before
A fire breathing dragon
A little red wagon
And the bones of a dinosaur

All this just couldn’t be
Mom can’t blame this junk on me
I pulled out a lawn mower
And the bed got much lower
It touched the floor when I pulled out the tree!

There were a few things more
. Beneath the bed on my floor
Like a giant clothes pin
And a shark’s dorsal fin
And finally I saw a door

I slowly opened the door
And looked down through the floor
But it was so dark
I just had to remark
“I wonder what this place is for!”

So I decided to throw
All that stuff down below
Then I tossed them all in
Again and again
Some were almost too big to go

But I finally did get through
It was more than I wanted to do
Now my room was all clean
Like I’d never seen
And my Mom thought it looked good too!

Now at night when I go to bed
I lie there and think what I did
I hope that door stays closed
‘Cause goodness knows
I want all that stuff to stay hid!
