THE PONY’S BIRTHDAY by Russ McKay

There once was a white pony named “Whirl”
Who had a mane that was long and would curl
He was a small breed horse
And for his birthday of course
He was lonely and wanted a girl
Well his parents said “No way!”
“You can’t have a girl this birthday”
“Something you really don’t need
And they’re too hard to feed”
Both his parents shook heads and said “Naaay!”
Whirl was understandably sad
“I’ve got a really mean Mom and Dad!”
He had to figure a way
To get a girl this birthday
Or it’d be the worst one he’d EVER had
Whirl kept asking to no avail
His Father swished him away with his tail
“My back’s always bare
I need a girl riding up there!”
But all of his pleas seemed to fail
Then one day to the stable came a girl
She exclaimed the instant she saw Whirl
“Daddy please buy that pony for me
I’ll take care of it you’ll see!”
“And I want to name it Pearl”
Her Father said “Ponies are hard to feed
And we really don’t have a need
A pony’s not a toy…
And besides…he’s a boy
So Pearl is a bad name indeed!”
As the girl was petting his mane
The pony whispered his name
“Oh Dad… exclaimed the girl
His real name is Whirl!”
“And see…he’s very tame”
Then her Father finally said “OK”
“You can have Whirl for your birthday!”
The girl shouted with glee
And Whirl gave out a “Whinee!”
The pair are happy still to this day
